Bill Bass, Jr., MD, FACEP
Dr. Bass graduated from UTMB, did a rotating Internship at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin, Texas and served three years with the US Army in Europe. In 1973 he worked at Brackenridge Hospital in the brand new field of Emergency Medicine and served the American Board of Emergency Medicine as an Oral Board Examiner for over 15 years. In 1975 Dr. Bass became the Director of the Emergency Department for Shannon Hospital where a physician efficiency system was developed allowing physicians to see 4-6 patients per hour. In 1977 he taught Emergency Medicine at Texas Tech School of Medicine to Family Medicine Residents while continuing his directorship at Shannon. During this time, he also served as the Medical Director of the Ethicon Suture plant, a Johnson and Johnson company. He spent five years practicing at the Moulton Community Medical Clinic, Lavaca County, Texas, but continued to fly to San Angelo to work in Emergency Medicine and as Ethicon's Medical Director. In 1985, he accepted an offer from the Shannon Trustees to return to San Angelo to be the Medical Director of two Minor Emergency Centers and develop a program for Rural Medical Care. In 1990 he accepted the Medical Directorship of the UTMB ER, was instrumental in the opening of the new trauma center serving over 72,000 patients and elected "Faculty of the Year" three times. After realizing a lifelong dream as a family doctor, Dr. Bass returned to Emergency Medicine as a Faculty member for the Emergency Medicine Residency at Scott and White in Temple for 12 years. In 2005 he became the Medical Director of the Emergency Department at St. Joseph Regional Health Center and continues to teach Physical Diagnosis and Emergency Medicine at Texas A&M School of Medicine. In 2009, Dr. Bass was elected to ESP's Board of Directors.
